A shower is a system, not a surface
Every shower failure story starts the same way: tile and grout treated as if they were the waterproofing. They are not — grout is porous and tile is a finish. The waterproof layer behind the tile is what keeps a shower from rotting the wall and floor structure over years of daily use. That is why this page exists separately from general tile: the scope conversation, the prep and the quote are different for wet work.
What a shower tile scope includes
- Demolition of the old surround or fiberglass unit when it is being replaced
- Substrate prep — backer and surface correction before tile
- Waterproofing when it is part of the agreed scope, confirmed on the quote
- Shower floor set with slope to the drain, walls, curb and niche layout
- Grout, sealing after cure, and finish details
Photos of finished tile work are on the projects page. Full bathroom remodeling that goes beyond the tile scope — vanities, plumbing moves, full-room work — is described on bragaremodeling.com.
The floor: slope and small tile
A shower floor has to drain, which means it is built on a slope — and large flat tile cannot follow a slope without lippage and puddles. Small-format mosaic tile bends with the pan and its grout lines give footing. That is a construction fact, not a style preference, and it is why shower floors and shower walls are usually two different tiles in the same palette.
Walls, curbs and niches: layout first
On the walls, larger formats mean fewer grout lines and easier cleaning; the layout is planned so cuts land at corners and the niche lines up with the grout pattern instead of cutting through it. Curbs get the same tile logic as the floor they contain. All of it is drawn into the written scope before setting starts — the quote is where waterproofing, tile formats and any warranty are confirmed, in writing.
Tub-shower conversions
The most common Jacksonville shower job is removing a one-piece fiberglass tub-shower — standard in 1980s and builder homes — and tiling the space. The decisions are made at the measure: tub kept and re-tiled around, or a walk-in shower; the valve and drain positions stay or move (plumbing changes are part of the broader remodeling scope on bragaremodeling.com). What this crew quotes and sets is the tile system: prep, waterproofing as scoped, tile, grout and seal.
Time and cure days
Showers cannot be rushed past chemistry: mortar cures, grout cures, sealer cures. The written quote lists the work days and the date the shower returns to use — plan on the bathroom being out of service for the duration, which is why many homeowners pair a shower job with the bathroom floor while the room is already apart.
