Why backsplashes deserve their own page
A backsplash is 20 to 40 square feet that sits at eye level, wraps around outlets, corners and a range, and finishes — or dates — the whole kitchen. Per square foot it is the most cut-intensive tile work in a home. That is exactly why it is quoted after a measure instead of off a rate card: two kitchens with the same wall area can need very different amounts of cutting.
What a backsplash scope includes
- Removal of the old backsplash or prep of the bare wall, as the measure finds it
- Layout planning — where the pattern starts, how it turns corners, how it meets the cabinets
- Setting with outlet and switch cuts fitted, not notched around
- Grout, sealing after cure, and caulked transitions at the counter
Finished tile work is on the projects page. Full kitchen remodeling beyond the tile scope is on bragaremodeling.com.
Tile choices: subway, mosaic, handmade-look
Ceramic subway tile is the default for a reason: it suits almost any cabinet, and a stacked or offset pattern changes the feel without changing the budget category. Mosaics add texture and are the usual pick behind a range. Handmade-look tile — with its slight surface variation — hides the small imperfections of real kitchen walls better than a perfectly flat glossy tile does. The body is almost always ceramic or glazed porcelain; on a dry wall, style leads and the measure confirms the fit.
Layout is the craft
The difference between a backsplash that looks installed and one that looks designed is decided before the first tile: where the first row starts so the top row does not end in a sliver at the cabinet, how the pattern turns the corner, and whether an outlet lands mid-tile (a clean cut) or on a joint (a visible one). We plan it at the measure and the written quote reflects the real cutting involved.
Pairing with a floor
Many backsplash requests arrive with a kitchen floor in the same breath. The floor is often the LVP package at its published price — waterproof plank handles kitchen water better than the old sheet vinyl it replaces — while the backsplash is quoted as its own job. One measure, two line items, no surprises in either.
